Welcome to Earth Camp

where people and nature flourish

Create change.

Bridging borders

for a future together.

5/3 – 5/5 Earth Camp『Minamisanriku to the World』 〜 2014 Spring Ambassadors 〜 (3 days)

『Bridge Tohoku and the World』

Creating spaces where people and nature flourish. This special program, the Earth Camp “Ambassadors” program will bring together diverse ideas and create on the grounds of Minamisanriku, where Earth Camp was born.

Earth Camp welcomes you to the beautiful local culture and nature of Minamisanriku ― a coastal town that is currently in the midst of rebuilding after being devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, but with an inviting community that has much to share.
Although much of the town was swept away, find here, the beauty of the ocean, mountains and the lives of the people side by side with the circle of nature. Furthermore, when diverse foreign groups flying in soon after the earthquake, it was a time where we realized the more we cross borders and combine efforts, the more power will be achieved.

Join us to touch the earth in Minamisanriku ― experience the ocean together with local fishermen working towards the recovery of the fishery industry, while enjoying fresh seafood straight out of the ocean. How did marine life change after the tsunami? How are the people’s lives connected to the ocean?  The journey into nature will continue on, where we will indulge in other green activities where you will meet the earth. Here, you will experience the circle of nature at first hand, and with all five senses. The tour is facilitated in both English and Japanese, opening doors for you to truly engage in and interact with the warm local community and get the real local experience first hand. In the end, language is just a tool for connecting with the world. If we all cross borders and combine efforts, we can create change.

Join us on this borderless journey to connect with communities and with nature and “create” toward a harmonious future, on the grounds of Tohoku.

「How is it different from the usual Earth Camp?」

At the Ambassadors program, participants as “Ambassadors” of Earth Camp, will experience, collaborate and create Earth Camp together from the ground up! Ambassadors will not only enjoy the multicultural×nature experience of Earth Camp, but will also create together and implement unique ideas for bridging Tohoku and the world, one of the core reasons why Earth Camp was born. Do you want to contribute your passion, ideas and creativity for a social cause and to let the world out there know about Minamisanriku? Welcome – you have come to the right place!

Ideas and any tools created here by the Ambassador team will be implemented widely to spread Earth Camp’s vision worldwide – it’s only the beginning of a great movement ahead! Through hands-on experiences, challenge and learn together with a new team beyond borders –  be it culture, nationality or language.

【Ambassador Values】

●『Global leaders』

Although we face various issues in our world today, if we cross borders and combine ideas, we can create change. What’s going to change tomorrow? It’s how we live today. At Earth Camp, we take that big leap over boundaries that separate us, be it language, culture or values and create the future with our own hands. It’s a place for communication among diverse crowds through a common language, English and by experiencing together, a journey of purpose.

●『Together with nature』

Humans and nature are one ecosystem― through experiences that bring us closer to nature, we wish to inspire everyday lifestyles, positively impact our environment and people, and move forward towards a sustainable world together. From farming fresh veggies to fishing out in the deep blue, at Earth Camp, we will learn the circle of life and gain skills to live with the earth.

■ Message from founder(Sosha Mitsunaga Smith)

sosha

I made my first trip to Tohoku, days after the North Eastern Japan Earthquake, to assist foreign aid groups in their efforts across the devastated coastal region. As time went on, my belief in the importance to build a sustainable effort in the area grew stronger, and as I graduated business school, was created in the form of Earth Camp in 2012.

The first program was held in the fields of Minamisanriku, along the coast in Northern Tohoku. Our hope is to invite people into the area together with new ideas and to strengthen the town’s international presence to build an even stronger community than it was before. My experiences taught me that although we face diverse issues across the world today, if we cross borders and combine ideas, we can create change. How do we live together in a world of diversity? How do we live side by side with nature? Earth Camp continues to explore these questions, towards a future where we live in coherence with ourselves and with nature, with ultimately no borders to set us apart – for ourselves and for those to come.
Join us in creating this movement – we look forward to meeting you!
