November 2014, TOMODACHI U.S.-Japan Youth Exchange Program

In November 2014, Earth Camp welcomed TOMODACHI U.S.-Japan Youth Exchange Program U.S. high school students for the second year.

Our members also being the overall coordinator for the two-week program, the students traveled in Kanto and Tohoku to learn through experience, cultural exchange, social entrepreneurship and leadership.

In Minamisanriku (Miyagi prefecture), students experienced Earth Camp and went out to sea with fishermen to learn about the recovery of the fishery industry and the coexistence of humans and nature for a sustainable way of life.

Afterwards, students enjoyed other activities with various partners such as a workshop with local high school students who are working on projects to revitalise the local tourism and a discussion session with the Mayor of Minamisanriku about the future of the town.

At the end of the whole program, they shared their stories with an audience including the U.S. Embassy Tokyo Deputy Chief of Mission, President of U.S.-Japan Council, sponsors and others.

Bringing back their experience to America, the young leaders will continue exploring what they can do for Tohoku and continue their challenge!
